The Murmur
Manual of Unquestioned, Relentless, Mundane, Unwritten Rules
The Murmur is everywhere. It’s just rarely named.
It’s the set of rules every organization runs on and nobody writes down. Silence is often safer than dissent. Agreement matters more than accuracy. Comfort outranks truth. Tension has to land somewhere, so someone quietly carries it. You prove your value by taking on what others avoid. And you advance by following the unwritten rules, whatever the stated values say.
The room looks aligned. That’s the point.
How It Gets Taught
Most of the time, the Murmur doesn’t sound like a rule. It sounds like good advice from people who want you to succees.
“Pick your battles.” Translation: Stay quiet when speaking up would be inconvenient.
“Work on your executive presence.” Translation: Look certain, even when a question would serve the work better.
“Soften your delivery.” Translation: Edit your honesty to protect others’ comfort, even if it dilutes your message.
“Manage up.” Translation: Read the politics before you trust your own judgment.
“Be a team player.” Translation: Keep the peace, even if you disagree.
“Don’t bring problems without solutions.” Translation: If you can’t fix it on the spot, don’t name it.
Each one keeps you agreeable, promotable, and contained. Once you see them that way, you can’t unsee them. And you can’t keep pretending they’re yours to follow.
See. Interrupt. Stay.
Seeing the Murmur is the start. Changing how you operate inside it happens in single moments, one question at a time.
See asks: What matters here?
Interrupt asks: What am I protecting? The first answer usually comes fast. The goals. The team. The relationship. Stay with the question a little longer and the real answer shows up, and it’s usually about you.
Stay asks: What am I willing to stand behind?
This shows up in how you speak in meetings, how you lead, how you respond to pressure, and how you make decisions you won’t have to undo later.
Working Together
We start with what’s real: what’s happening in the room, what the system is rewarding, and what you’re seeing but not saying.
From there, the work is catching the reflex to smooth things over, carry what isn’t yours, or stay quiet, and practicing a different move in the situations you’re facing now.
I’ll guide when you want guidance and offer perspective when you’re in the fog. I won’t let you drift just because you’re smart enough to sound like you’ve got it handled. I’ll listen closely to what you say, and even more closely to what you almost said.
What Changes
Clients usually notice the difference in the room first.
You say what you see while it still matters, instead of in the hallway afterward.
You hand back work that isn’t yours, and the people who own it start owning it.
You make decisions faster, because you stop running them past every opinion in your head.
You spend less time replaying meetings and rehearsing conversations.
People know where you stand, and they trust you more for it.
You keep teh competence and reliability that got you here. It just stops costing you as much.
Sessions
60–90 minutes. Long enough to go deep, short enough to stay sharp.
Weekly or every two weeks. A steady rhythm to keep momentum without overload.
Confidential space. No reputation management, no posturing, just truth.
